Pelvic scan! How important is it for women?

A pelvic scan involves with ultrasound assessment to detect female reproductive abnormalities whether the patient has symptoms or not. This test is significant since it can protect the spread of diseases or it allows patient can be treated at the right time.

 

The doctor will recommend a pelvic scan to women at 30 years of age onward as well as women who used to have sexual intercourse. People in these groups should receive the test regularly at least once a year to evaluate ovarian cysts or uterine fibroids, sexually transmitted diseases or other issues related to reproductive organs. Pelvic scan can help the doctor to examine uterus and ovaries since the abnormalities occurred in these internal organs cannot be detected from an external examination.

 

Apart from the above mentioned, woman who has following symptoms should see the doctor then receive a pelvic scan.

  • Repeated abdominal pain or discomfort
  • A lump found by touching on abdomen
  • Offensive leucorrhea with excessive mucus
  • Irregular period, amenorrhea or heavy menstruation

 

Conditions mostly found in female upon pelvic ultrasound are including:

  • Ovarian cysts caused by endometriosis. Mostly happen to women who have a heavy period pain.
  • Cervical cancer caused by Human papillomavirus (HPV). Especially, married women or women who used to have sexual intercourse will be more vulnerable.
  • Myoma uteri. The symptoms are including a lump is found in abdomen or heavy menstruation.

 

Women should visit obstetric and gynecologist regularly once a year in order to have a good reproductive health and to prevent disease. Importantly, a female needs to maintain personal hygiene habits, do a self-examination frequently and be safe whenever having sex.
