Q&A with Dr. Poonkiat The Result of The Ovarian Stimulation using The Hormone Injection

The ovarian stimulation using hormone injection may affect the women’s body. The result can be categorized into two types, a short-term and long-term results.

Short-Term Result (1-2 weeks during the ovarian stimulation)

There might be some mild side effects as follows:

  • As the patients need to inject continuously, the reaction to the injected area may include biting, swelling or inflammation.
  • Upset stomach, abdominal discomfort, gaining weight because the egg is developing.
  • Nausea because the body is sensitive to the hormone.
  • Allergic to anesthetic taken during the egg retrieval procedure.

Severe side effects:

The complication disease that might occur from the ovarian stimulation is an Ovarian Hyperstimulation Syndrome or OHSS that the ovaries are responding excessively to the egg stimulation. This side effect is considered to be a rare complication. If the symptom is severe, the ovaries will be swelling, and there will be some fluid collection in the abdomen and the chest. The patient may need to admit ICU and it could be fatal. However, this condition rarely occurs nowadays.

Long-Term Result

Many people are worried about the effects of hormones taking that can cause long-term problems with the body, such as cancer, approach menopause faster because the eggs are running out before a normal age, and so on.

From collecting data and studying those who collect egg in the past 20-30 years, we found that the statistic of cancer is not getting higher. The rate of having cancer is just normal. However, we will have to see how it will be in the future.

The eggs are running out quickly, making the female approach menopause faster. The female should not worry about this because there are hundreds of thousands of eggs in a woman’s ovary during a young age. This problem will not occur because there will be only 400-500 eggs ovulating. The remaining eggs will wither when approaching menopause naturally.

At present, we are using a synthetic hormone that is similar to the natural hormone and highly safe. Therefore, it quite safe for the patients.

Frequent drinking and hangovers increase the risk of infertility

Frequent parties and hangovers can directly and indirectly affect your health, especially for those who are already planning to have children. This makes it even more difficult to have children!

Because frequent and large amounts of alcoholic beverages cause the hormones in the body to function abnormally.

What are the effects of drinking alcohol and hangovers?

In men > Abnormal testosterone production results in the body producing less sperm, poor quality sperm, and reduced fertilization ability.

In women > Abnormalities in the pituitary glands hormone system and hormones that control ovarian function result in no ovulation, abnormal uterine lining, and increased chances of premature birth or miscarriage.

It also reduces the absorption of vitamins and minerals, increasing the risk of malnutrition such as magnesium and potassium. It also comes with negative effects from a “hangover” such as insufficient sleep, restless sleep, headaches, dizziness, vomiting, dehydration, fatigue, etc. These are indirect negative effects that affect the body.

Therefore, drinking excessive amounts of liquor, beer, wine, or other alcoholic beverages is a cause of infertility and reduces the chances of having children by up to 50%.

If anyone is planning a pregnancy and still has problems controlling their alcohol consumption, you may need to consider consulting a mental health professional or medical professional to find a treatment plan.
