Infertility can be treated by medication, surgery, or ICSI

Nowadays, there are several methods to treat infertility. It’s recommended to select the right way that fits the physical condition of each person. And also suitable for various factors that cause infertility, such as the age of the spouse and other environmental factors. Today we will talk about methods for treating infertility that are actually effective at present. Which can be divided into 3 main groups: medication, surgery, and the use of assisted reproductive technology (IVF). Let’s get to know each method together.

Infertility Treatment for Women

At present, surgery used to treat infertility is not as popular as it should be. It’s because there are infertility treatments using assisted reproductive technology, such as in vitro fertilization which provides higher success rate and also fewer complications after surgery. But surgical methods can still be used in various cases such as:

  • Fallopian tube surgery

It is a fallopian tube surgery for people who have problems with blocked fallopian tubes. Or the fallopian tubes are swollen. The surgery is to create a new opening of oviduct in order to increase the pregnancy rate. In case the fallopian tube is narrowed or severe stenosis, the surgery to remove oviduct will increase the success of IVF. However, this surgery may increase the risk of an ectopic pregnancy.

  • Endometriosis surgery and pelvic adhesion removal

Endometriosis mostly happens with pelvic adhesion. Both can cause infertility. Treatment for endometriosis and pelvic adhesion is a laparoscopic surgery instead of open-abdominal surgery that may cause huge wound after the procedure.

  • Sterilization reversal

It is a treatment for patients who has had female sterilization. This method involves surgery to reconnect the fallopian tubes in order to get pregnant again. Special equipment is required to magnify images during surgery. Because it is a surgical process that requires high meticulousness. There is a high treatment success rate in young women. And there are no other diseases that cause infertility.

  • Medication

Infertility treatment with medication is a treatment to induce female ovulation. Using hormone medication to adjust hormones and stimulate eggs and ovulation, e.g., gonadotropins like FSH and LH. These medicines are effective for egg stimulation but some side effects may happen as well. Therefore, physician’s advice will be needed every time before taking the medicines.

  • ICSI – Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection

This method is very popular for treating infertility today. Because it is using modern technology to treat infertility. ICSI is effective in collecting fully mature eggs with the best quality from female and fertilize with the best sperm from male. To be taken through the fertilization process in the laboratory. Culture the embryo and transfer the embryo into the uterine cavity to allow implantation and further pregnancy.

Infertility Treatment for Men

  • Male sterilization reversal

As male sterilization is a surgery to block sperm from reaching epididymis by cutting or tying vas deferens. Therefore, pregnancy can’t happen due to no sperm in the semen when ejaculated. Sterilization reversal is used to reopen sperm pathway then the sperm will be able to travel from vas deferens to epididymis again. Nowadays, there are 2 ways of sterilization reversal:

  • Microsurgery: It is a modern surgery using microscope to help reconnect vas deferens. It provides higher success rate than macrosurgery.
  • Macrosurgery: It is a surgery using magnifier to help reconnect vas deferens. It doesn’t take long time but provides less success rate compared to the first method.

  • Medication

This method will be used for 2 main purposes:

  1. Treat sexual impotence, such as erectile dysfunction, premature ejaculation, or others. Medicine can increase pregnancy rate and it can be treated by counselling as well.
  2. Treat hormone disorders: Some people face infertility because of hormone disorders. Hormone replacement medicines will regulate hormone function and treat infertility.
  • ICSI – Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection

It is a common infertility treatment for men with poor sperm production due to many reasons like male vasectomy. If men with this problem are still able to produce sperm, ICSI will be suggested to increase pregnancy chance. Together with ICSI, some small incisions like PESA and TESE will be proceeded in order to extract sperm to fertilize with eggs. However, you should consider the appropriateness and efficacy of other treatments before making decision for your best outcome.
