The importance of vitamin D and infertility
What is the structure of vitamin D?
It has a structure similar to sex hormones. It plays an important role in various body systems, such as the immune system, metabolism, circulatory system, and nervous system. New mechanisms of vitamin D have been discovered, such as reducing pain, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, helping to control blood pressure, controlling blood sugar levels, helping to create and function white blood cells, and helping to prevent infection.
Vitamin D or calciferol is a hormone that is produced in the skin from exposure to sunlight. It helps in the absorption of calcium and phosphorus from food, helps maintain normal levels of these minerals in the blood, and inhibits the secretion of parathyroid hormone, which causes bone breakdown.
Exposure to sunlight for 10-15 minutes 2-4 times a week is sufficient to produce the vitamin D that the body needs. It is not necessary to get vitamin D from food, except for people who need more calcium than normal, such as pregnant or breastfeeding women. However, it is currently found that due to changing behavior, most people stay in rooms or buildings and come out to be exposed to sunlight less, which leads to a condition that we call vitamin D insufficiency or deficiency.
In addition, people with dark skin, obese people, older people, and people with PCOS may be at risk of vitamin D deficiency because it is more difficult to synthesize vitamin D, including increased vitamin D utilization. Due to these factors, it has been found that women and men of reproductive age may have vitamin deficiencies without realizing it, which may result in infertility.
