Can you choose the gender of your baby with IVF/ICSI?

Boys or Girls, is it true that IVF can help with gender selection?

Infertility is a condition in which a couple have been trying to conceive for more than 1 year or a couple who are over 35 years old and have been trying to conceive for about 6 months but still haven’t gotten pregnant. This condition affects the mind more or less. Many couples then select the assisted reproductive technology to increase their chances of conceiving. The popular technology is IVF and ICSI, which are in vitro fertilization procedures that create embryos in a laboratory instead of naturally occurring within a woman’s body. IVF and ICSI are complicated processes and require modern technology. With such modernization, many couples misunderstand that through IVF or ICSI they can choose the gender of their child. Is it true or not? This article has the answer for you.

Can IVF and ICSI really choose the gender of your child?

Many couples understand that through IVF or ICSI they can choose the gender of their child. In fact, through IVF or ICSI, you cannot choose the sex of your baby, but you can know the sex of the embryo under certain conditions.

Knowing the gender of the embryo is a side benefit of preimplantation genetic testing. The couple who can be proceeded with genetic testing must meet the following conditions: Women must be over 35 years of age or have a history of more than 2 miscarriages with a pregnancy of no more than 12 weeks or have a test result confirming that the miscarriage resulted from a genetic abnormality in the fetus. Or being unable to conceive after undergoing IVF 2 times in a row and are carriers of genetic diseases, etc.

Genetic disease is caused by the presence of abnormal genes on chromosomes. There are 23 pairs of chromosomes in the body, with 22 pairs of autosome chromosomes and 1 pair of sex chromosomes. Chromosomes with abnormal genes cause genetic diseases, such as chromosome 21 associated with down syndrome, Y chromosome causing hirsutism in the ear area, syndactyly of toes, and ichthyosis. The X chromosome can cause muscle weakness, hemophilia, and bleeding disorders.

Such genetic diseases can be passed on to children. Therefore, parents who are at risk must be screened for genetic abnormalities, which involves examining all 23 pairs of chromosomes in one time. This can reveal an embryo’s gender before its implantation.

Knowing the embryo’s gender can help prevent the transmission of abnormal genes from X and Y chromosomes, which are chromosomes that can cause genetic diseases only in certain genders. For example, hirsutism in the ear area only happens to men because the abnormal genes are on the Y chromosome. Therefore, preimplantation genetic testing is a good way to prevent the heredity of genetic diseases from generation to generation.

To proceed preimplantation genetic testing, the health facilities and doctors must have a certificate from the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists of Thailand in order to have the right to diagnose genetic abnormalities from chromosomes. Because choosing the gender of a child without genetic problems is considered illegal in Thailand. No any hospital or doctor has the right to do it for the patients.

In-vitro fertilization creates an opportunity for infertile couples to have children as desired. IVF and ICSI are methods for having children that require both physical and mental readiness. Especially a couple’s finance because the price of IVF or ICSI starts at hundreds of thousands or more per cycle, which can be considered a relatively high expense. Currently, ICSI is more popular because it is a modern method and has a higher success rate than IVF.

Therefore, when choosing a hospital for IVF or ICSI, you must consider a hospital that has standards and has a license to provide services regarding assisted reproductive technology according to the regulations of Thai Medical Council. Consider whether the doctor has expertise in reproductive medicine or how much experience they have in treating infertility. And consider the competency of medical laboratory whether they have passed the standards or been inspected by relevant authority or not. Such consideration will ensure that hospitals and doctors have quality and standards that will help you succeed as wished.

Frequent drinking and hangovers increase the risk of infertility

Frequent drinking and hangovers increase the risk of infertility

Frequent parties and hangovers can directly and indirectly affect your health, especially for those who are already planning to have children. This makes it even more difficult to have children!

Because frequent and large amounts of alcoholic beverages cause the hormones in the body to function abnormally.

What are the effects of drinking alcohol and hangovers?

In men > Abnormal testosterone production results in the body producing less sperm, poor quality sperm, and reduced fertilization ability.

In women > Abnormalities in the pituitary glands hormone system and hormones that control ovarian function result in no ovulation, abnormal uterine lining, and increased chances of premature birth or miscarriage.

It also reduces the absorption of vitamins and minerals, increasing the risk of malnutrition such as magnesium and potassium. It also comes with negative effects from a “hangover” such as insufficient sleep, restless sleep, headaches, dizziness, vomiting, dehydration, fatigue, etc. These are indirect negative effects that affect the body.

Therefore, drinking excessive amounts of liquor, beer, wine, or other alcoholic beverages is a cause of infertility and reduces the chances of having children by up to 50%.

If anyone is planning a pregnancy and still has problems controlling their alcohol consumption, you may need to consider consulting a mental health professional or medical professional to find a treatment plan.

When preparing to have a baby, should you eat more animal protein or plant protein?

“Protein” is important for people of all ages, and they will receive different benefits. It must be consumed in different amounts at different ages. Protein is easily found in animal products, such as meat, milk, eggs, and processed foods such as butter and cheese.

But for parents who want to start taking care of themselves to avoid infertility, they can begin by avoiding high-fat foods and trans fats, such as margarine, fried foods, and snacks, to control blood sugar levels and reduce the risk of diabetes.

So how should people who want to have children eat protein?

If you are preparing to have children, you should eat 1-1.5 grams of protein per body weight/day. Proteins that should be eaten include fish, eggs, chicken, beef, pork, etc.

Eating protein from animals should be done in moderation. Although the nutritional value of animal protein is high, fat, cholesterol, and the risk of various dangerous diseases are also increased.

Plant protein is low in saturated fat, has no cholesterol, is high in fiber, and has fewer calories than animal protein. They can be eaten together, but it is recommended to avoid plant proteins that have effects similar to female hormones, such as soybeans and processed soybean proteins because they can affect the uterus.

Eating protein with iron will help strengthen the uterus and also help produce quality eggs. In addition, eating green vegetables to increase folate and vitamin B helps accelerate ovulation, resulting in a good chance of pregnancy in the future.
