Cat and Pregnant Woman Must read this if you have cat!

“Cats” are an animal that humans like to raise or take care of. Because it is like a friend who stands beside us when we are lonely.

With its extremely friendly, sociable personality, there are many studies using cats to treat depression. But we may have heard or read many things. Information saying that pregnant women are prohibited from living with or touching cats closely. Because it will cause some diseases to be transmitted to the mother and child in the womb.

Today we will take you to get to know, Toxoplasmosis. The disease is caused by infection with the protozoan Toxoplasma gondii. It can be found all over the world, especially in the tropical countries like Thailand.

This protozoan has a life cycle that can grow in all warm-blooded animals. But cats are the true carriers of this type of infection. The parasite uses the cat’s digestive tract to grow completely and releases eggs (oocysts) mixed with the feces of the cats we raise. So, the parasite will remain in a cat litter. If we don’t take care of cleanliness or don’t wash hands before grabbing something to eat, it allows this germ to enter the body.

But not all cats have this type of infection in their bodies. Cats that are at risk of being infected are cats that are raised in an open system and can leave the house and eat other animals such as rats or birds, or they may be cats that eat raw meat or has not been cooked well before eating causing the infection.

Moreover, even though this germ can pass into the fetal body, but not all pregnant mothers who are exposed to this type of infection will cause their children to have Toxoplasmosis. The most dangerous period is infection during the first 3 months of pregnancy. If the symptoms are severe, it may cause the baby to die while still in the womb.

60% of pregnant mothers who are infected, no abnormal symptoms were found in the child.

30% will have severe symptoms in children.

10% chance of death.

It was also found that the infants 6-7 months old who are infected may be blind, mentally retarded, and have learning problems. But in some cases, no severe symptoms were found or some infants, even though they were infected, they had no abnormal symptoms. Or if the mother’s body has been exposed to this infection since before pregnancy and the body already has antibodies to this type of infection, this infection will be destroyed and is not considered a risk group.

Raising cats or living together with cats does not always cause Toxoplasmosis. However, you should take precautions and learn to live with cats during pregnancy to reduce the risk of disease. In the next post, we will tell you how to live together safely with your cat. Please wait and follow.
