Edwards syndrome an abnormality of chromosome pair 18

In addition to the popular disease Down syndrome, there is also “Edwards syndrome (Trisomy 18)”, which is a chromosomal abnormality that is found less frequently.

Edwards syndrome is an abnormality of chromosome pair 18. Normally, babies have 23 pairs of chromosomes, 2 strands per pair. However, babies with Edwards syndrome have an extra 18strand, making this pair of chromosomes 3 strands.

What causes Edwards syndrome?

The factors that cause babies to have this type of chromosomal abnormality can occur in mothers of all ages. If you get pregnant at an older age, you may be at a higher risk. The cause of this condition is still unclear. It may be due to a chromosomal abnormality that occurs during cell division in the embryo or it may be due to a chromosomal abnormality from the egg or sperm cell.

How do children with Edwards syndrome develop?

Children will have delayed development, which in layman’s terms is called “mentally retarded”. In addition, there will be problems with slow growth, learning problems, low weight, or abnormal development of various organs while still in the womb. Most babies with this condition die before birth or shortly after birth. Most babies have an average lifespan of no more than 1 year.

What are the symptoms of children with Edwards syndrome?

  • Abnormal body shape, such as abnormal heart, small or deformed head, low birth weight, lower than normal ear level, cleft lip and palate, small chin and mouth, twisted hands and feet, abnormally curved feet, protruding heels, etc.

  • Intestines are outside the abdomen and problems with eating

  • Problems with vision, hearing, and breathing

Prevention and treatment of children with Edwards syndrome?

Currently, no cure can cure the disease. Treatment is based on the symptoms that occur because it is a chromosomal abnormality that cannot be cured. Prevention methods include consulting a specialist in planning to have children. If pregnant, a Nipt Test or amniocentesis may be required to plan for the pregnancy.

Frequent drinking and hangovers increase the risk of infertility

Frequent parties and hangovers can directly and indirectly affect your health, especially for those who are already planning to have children. This makes it even more difficult to have children!

Because frequent and large amounts of alcoholic beverages cause the hormones in the body to function abnormally.

What are the effects of drinking alcohol and hangovers?

In men > Abnormal testosterone production results in the body producing less sperm, poor quality sperm, and reduced fertilization ability.

In women > Abnormalities in the pituitary glands hormone system and hormones that control ovarian function result in no ovulation, abnormal uterine lining, and increased chances of premature birth or miscarriage.

It also reduces the absorption of vitamins and minerals, increasing the risk of malnutrition such as magnesium and potassium. It also comes with negative effects from a “hangover” such as insufficient sleep, restless sleep, headaches, dizziness, vomiting, dehydration, fatigue, etc. These are indirect negative effects that affect the body.

Therefore, drinking excessive amounts of liquor, beer, wine, or other alcoholic beverages is a cause of infertility and reduces the chances of having children by up to 50%.

If anyone is planning a pregnancy and still has problems controlling their alcohol consumption, you may need to consider consulting a mental health professional or medical professional to find a treatment plan.
